What makes Astro different from Next.js?

Astro ships zero JavaScript by default, pages are rendered to pure HTML/CSS on the server, with JavaScript only added for specific interactive components (Islands). Next.js ships React as its runtime even for static pages. For content-heavy sites like marketing pages, blogs, and documentation, Astro produces faster pages and higher Core Web Vitals scores because there's no JavaScript framework to parse and execute. For sites with significant interactivity, dashboards, apps, e-commerce, Next.js is usually the better choice.

What is Islands Architecture?

Islands Architecture means interactive UI components are hydrated independently, surrounded by static HTML. Only the interactive "islands" (a carousel, a search box, a live chat widget) load JavaScript, the rest of the page is pure HTML. This means a page can have complex interactive elements without the performance penalty of loading an entire JavaScript framework for every visitor.

Can Astro use React components?

Yes. Astro supports React, Vue, Svelte, Preact, SolidJS, and plain web components as Islands. You can mix frameworks within the same page, use React for a complex component you already have, Vue for another, and keep everything else as zero-JS Astro components. This framework-agnostic approach is one of Astro's most practical advantages.

Is Astro good for SEO?

Excellent, arguably better than any other framework for SEO. Pages are server-rendered HTML by default, so search engines index content without waiting for JavaScript. Combined with near-zero JavaScript weight (improving LCP and TBT), correct HTML semantics, and built-in sitemap generation, Astro sites tend to rank well.

How much does an Astro website cost?

A marketing site built with Astro typically costs £5,000–£12,000 depending on complexity and CMS integration. A documentation site with Starlight costs £3,000–£8,000. A larger content-heavy publication with custom design costs £10,000–£25,000. Flat written quote after a free discovery call.

Does Astro support dynamic content?

Yes. Astro supports server-side rendering (SSR) for dynamic routes via an adapter (Vercel, Cloudflare, Node). You can mix static and server-rendered pages in the same project. For mostly-static sites with a few dynamic routes (e.g., a search page or API endpoint), Astro's hybrid rendering is ideal.
