(FAQ)
Common questions about
marketplace development.
What type of Stripe Connect account should we use?
There are three options: Express (fastest to implement, Stripe hosts the onboarding), Standard (vendors have a full Stripe account they manage), and Custom (you control the entire UX but take on more compliance responsibility). For most marketplaces, we recommend Stripe Express, it balances a smooth vendor experience with minimal compliance burden for the platform. We review your specific situation during scoping.
How do you handle commissions and platform fees?
Stripe Connect supports two models: destination charges (the platform collects full payment, then pays out to vendors minus a fee) and direct charges (the vendor receives payment directly, the platform takes an application fee). We configure whichever model fits your business, fixed percentage, variable by category, or tiered based on vendor volume.
Can vendors manage their own listings and orders?
Yes. Vendor dashboards are a core deliverable. Vendors can self-serve: create and edit listings, manage inventory, view and fulfil orders, see payout history, and access basic analytics. You control the level of autonomy, some clients prefer admin approval on new listings, others allow full vendor self-service.
How do you handle disputes and refunds?
We build a dispute resolution flow into the admin dashboard, buyers can raise a dispute within a configurable window, the vendor is notified, and an admin can adjudicate. Stripe's dispute resolution is available as a fallback for chargeback cases. Refund flows (full or partial) are implemented through Stripe and reflected in vendor payout adjustments.
How much does marketplace development cost?
A focused marketplace MVP, product listings, Stripe Connect payouts, vendor dashboard, and admin tools, typically costs £20,000–£40,000. A full-featured marketplace with advanced search, messaging, identity verification, and rental/booking flows typically costs £40,000–£80,000+. Flat written quote after a free scoping call.
How long does a marketplace take to build?
A focused MVP takes 8–14 weeks. A full-featured marketplace with complex flows (rentals, escrow, messaging, identity verification) takes 16–24 weeks. We agree a firm timeline in the proposal, with weekly staging updates so you see progress throughout.
