How do you check for broken links and what do you do about them?

We identify internal links pointing to deleted or renamed pages, external links that have since gone offline, and redirect chains that add unnecessary load time. We fix internal broken links directly and either update or remove broken external links. How are updates applied safely without breaking the site?
Every update runs on a staging clone of your live site first.
