The short answer: yes, Wix is good for SEO.
Not great for every use case. Not equal to WordPress in flexibility. But for most small and medium businesses — including those with real SEO ambitions — Wix is entirely capable of ranking on Google.
The “Wix is bad for SEO” narrative originates from around 2012–2017, when Wix sites were rendered entirely in Flash or early JavaScript that Google’s crawler could not read. That era is long gone. Wix overhauled its rendering engine, introduced server-side rendering for core pages, and built a proper SEO settings panel that covers all the fundamentals.
Our verdict: Wix covers every technical SEO requirement Google cares about. The gap between Wix and WordPress for SEO has narrowed to mostly Core Web Vitals performance and deep technical customisation — neither of which affects the majority of small business sites. A properly built Wix site will rank. A poorly built WordPress site will not.
What Wix supports for SEO in 2026.
Most of what matters for on-page and technical SEO is now available natively in Wix. Here is what you get out of the box and what requires a developer.
Meta titles and descriptions
Set individually on every page via the Wix SEO Settings panel. Supports dynamic variables for collection pages so product and blog post titles populate automatically.
Canonical tags
Wix generates canonical tags automatically and lets you override them per-page. Correctly configured by default — no duplicate content risk from Wix itself.
XML sitemap
Auto-generated at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Includes all published pages, blog posts, products, and collection items. Submittable directly to Google Search Console via Wix's built-in integration.
robots.txt editing
Fully editable in Wix SEO Settings. You can block or allow any directory, set crawl-delay rules, and reference your sitemap URL — the same controls available in WordPress.
301 redirects
Managed via the Wix Redirects tool. Add URL-level redirects without touching code. Supports wildcard redirects for restructured URL paths.
Open Graph and social tags
Set per-page in the SEO panel. Controls the title, description, and image that appear when a page is shared on social media or linked in Slack — important for brand visibility and indirect SEO signals.
SSL certificate
Included on all Wix paid plans. HTTPS is active by default — no manual configuration required. HTTP requests redirect to HTTPS automatically.
Mobile responsiveness
Wix Studio uses a responsive grid engine. All sites are served as fully responsive layouts across desktop, tablet, and mobile — a confirmed Google ranking factor.
Google Search Console integration
Connect directly from Wix's marketing dashboard. Submits your sitemap, verifies ownership, and surfaces basic Search Console data without leaving Wix.
Structured data (schema)
Supported via Wix's built-in schema tools and custom Velo code blocks. LocalBusiness, Product, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and more — we cover this in detail below.
Where Wix still falls short.
Wix is not a perfect SEO platform. These are the real limitations — not the outdated myths — that matter for specific types of projects.
01
Core Web Vitals — Wix scores lower than lean WordPress builds
This is the most significant real SEO limitation of Wix. Wix renders pages with a JavaScript layer that adds weight compared to a lean static HTML/CSS WordPress theme. In our testing, a default Wix Studio site achieves LCP scores of 2.8–3.5 seconds on mobile — above Google's "Good" threshold of 2.5s. A lean WordPress build on fast hosting typically achieves 1.8–2.2 seconds. For most informational sites this difference is minimal; for competitive commercial keywords where every marginal signal matters, it can be a factor.
02
URL structure — some paths cannot be fully controlled
Wix automatically adds prefixes to certain page types: /blog/ for blog posts, /shop/ or /product/ for products, /members/ for membership pages. You cannot remove these prefixes entirely. For most businesses this is not an issue. For sites that need clean, keyword-rich URLs across all page types (e.g. a large ecommerce catalogue where URL structure affects faceted navigation SEO), this is a genuine constraint.
03
No server-side control for large-scale technical SEO
Wix is a hosted SaaS platform — you cannot access the server configuration, modify HTTP headers directly, implement edge caching rules, or use server-side rendering frameworks. For enterprise sites with 10,000+ pages, complex international hreflang structures, or advanced JavaScript SEO requirements, Wix's closed infrastructure is a hard ceiling. This is not a concern for the vast majority of SME websites.
04
Third-party Wix apps add JavaScript weight
Wix's App Market has 300+ add-ons. Each one loads additional JavaScript on your pages. Installing five or six apps — booking tools, review widgets, live chat, pop-ups — can significantly increase page weight and hurt Core Web Vitals. A developer building on Wix uses Velo to build custom functionality natively rather than stacking apps, keeping the codebase lean.
05
No plugin ecosystem equivalent to WordPress
WordPress has plugins like Yoast SEO, RankMath, and Schema Pro that give granular control over technical SEO at scale. Wix's SEO tools are good but not as deep. For sites that need highly customised SEO automation — programmatic metadata, custom hreflang injection, dynamic schema generation at scale — WordPress gives more control.
Wix vs WordPress for SEO: a direct comparison.
The honest comparison — not the one written by a WordPress plugin company.
| SEO factor | Wix | WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Meta titles & descriptions | ✓ Full control per page | ✓ Full control per page |
| Canonical tags | ✓ Auto-generated + overridable | ✓ Plugin-managed |
| XML sitemap | ✓ Auto-generated | ✓ Plugin-generated |
| robots.txt | ✓ Editable | ✓ Editable |
| 301 redirects | ✓ Built-in redirect manager | ✓ Plugin or htaccess |
| Structured data / schema | ✓ Built-in + Velo custom | ✓ Full control via plugins |
| Core Web Vitals | ~ Good with optimisation | ✓ Excellent with lean theme |
| URL structure control | ~ Partial (prefixes fixed) | ✓ Full control |
| Page speed ceiling | ~ 85–92 Lighthouse (typical) | ✓ 95+ achievable |
| Crawl budget control | ~ Limited | ✓ Full server access |
| Non-developer SEO management | ✓ Easier | ~ Requires plugin knowledge |
| Hosting / server control | ✗ Closed platform | ✓ Full server access |
| Cost of ongoing SEO changes | ✓ Lower — built-in tools | ~ Depends on theme/plugin setup |
The table shows what most honest SEO comparisons miss: Wix and WordPress are roughly equivalent on 10 of the 13 factors that Google actually uses to rank pages. The gap is in Core Web Vitals, URL structure, and server-level control — which matters for enterprise and large ecommerce sites but rarely for the SME market.
Can Wix actually rank on Google?
Yes. Definitively. We have built Wix sites that rank on page one for local commercial keywords in London — a market with significantly more competition than most of the UK. Wix is not a barrier to ranking. These are the factors that actually determine whether a Wix site ranks.
Content quality and topical depth
Google ranks pages, not platforms. A Wix page with 2,000 words of genuinely useful, well-structured content that answers the search query will outrank a WordPress page with 300 words of thin copy — every time. Content is the dominant ranking signal, not platform choice.
On-page SEO configuration
Most Wix sites that do not rank have not been properly configured — missing meta descriptions, no structured data, no internal linking strategy, images without alt text. These are setup failures, not platform failures. When we build Wix sites professionally, we configure every SEO element as standard before launch.
Backlink authority
Domain authority — the quality and quantity of external sites linking to yours — is the single strongest ranking signal for competitive keywords. A Wix site with strong backlinks will outrank a WordPress site with none. Backlinks are entirely independent of which CMS you use.
Page speed and Core Web Vitals
This is Wix’s most legitimate SEO disadvantage. Google uses Core Web Vitals as a page experience signal — LCP, INP, and CLS. A well-optimised Wix site achieves “Good” status on all three; a default Wix build with heavy apps often achieves “Needs Improvement”. Keeping a Wix site lean — fewer third-party apps, compressed images, Velo instead of heavy plugins — is what a Wix developer does that the drag-and-drop editor alone cannot guarantee.
Wix and Core Web Vitals.
Core Web Vitals are Google’s user experience metrics — Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). They are a confirmed ranking signal, though a minor one compared to content and backlinks.
Out of the box, Wix Studio sites score reasonably well but rarely achieve the green “Good” thresholds on mobile without optimisation. The main culprits are:
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)
Common cause: Hero image loading time
Preload the hero image, use WebP at the correct dimensions, reduce server response time
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)
Common cause: JavaScript execution delay
Reduce third-party app scripts, defer non-critical Wix widgets, use Velo instead of heavy apps
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)
Common cause: Images loading without reserved dimensions
Set explicit width and height on all images; avoid injecting content above the fold after page load
With proper optimisation, Wix sites can achieve “Good” on all three metrics. It requires deliberate effort — it does not happen automatically. This is one of the key reasons to use a professional Wix agency rather than building the site yourself, and why we include a Core Web Vitals pass as standard on every build.
Schema markup and structured data on Wix.
Structured data is JSON-LD code that tells Google exactly what your page is about — your business type, your services, your FAQs, your reviews. It powers rich results: star ratings in search snippets, FAQ dropdowns, breadcrumb trails. Wix supports it fully, though it requires a developer for anything beyond the basics.
Built-in schema (no code required)
- LocalBusiness schema — auto-generated from your Wix business profile
- Product schema — auto-generated for Wix Stores product pages
- Article schema — auto-generated for Wix Blog posts
- BreadcrumbList — auto-generated on pages with breadcrumb navigation
Developer-added schema (via Velo or custom HTML)
- FAQPage schema — FAQ accordion with rich result eligibility
- Service schema — per-service structured data for professional services
- HowTo schema — step-by-step guide pages
- Review / AggregateRating — displaying ratings in search snippets
- Organization schema with sameAs for authoritative entity signals
- WebPage with SpeakableSpecification — for AI engine visibility
Every Wix website we build in London includes a full structured data implementation — Organization, LocalBusiness, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage, and Service schema as standard, with page-specific schema added for key landing pages. We validate every schema block against Google’s Rich Results Test before launch.
What a Wix developer does for SEO that you cannot do alone.
Wix’s drag-and-drop editor gives you access to most SEO settings. But there is a ceiling — things only achievable with Wix Velo (JavaScript development within Wix) or a developer’s knowledge of what to configure and in what order.
Dynamic schema via Velo
Programmatically inject JSON-LD structured data that changes based on the page — service pages get Service schema, blog posts get Article schema, product pages get Product schema with pricing. Impossible without Velo.
Canonical tag management at scale
For collection pages (all products, all blog posts, category pages) — setting canonical, noindex, and pagination signals correctly so Google crawls the right pages and ignores the right ones.
Core Web Vitals optimisation
Identifying which Wix apps and scripts are causing LCP and INP failures, replacing heavy third-party scripts with lean Velo alternatives, preloading hero images, and setting image dimensions site-wide.
Internal linking architecture
Designing the site's internal link structure so that link equity flows from high-authority pages to target keyword pages — not randomly following where the design leads.
Hreflang for multi-language sites
Wix supports multi-language sites but hreflang tags need careful configuration. Incorrect hreflang causes Google to serve the wrong language version to international users — a common mistake on DIY Wix builds.
Google Search Console error resolution
Identifying and resolving crawl errors, page indexing issues, mobile usability problems, and Core Web Vitals failures flagged in Search Console — interpreting the data and knowing which issues actually affect rankings.
Frequently asked questions.
Is Wix good for SEO in 2026?+
Yes — Wix is now genuinely capable for SEO. It supports custom meta titles and descriptions, canonical tags, structured data, XML sitemaps, robots.txt editing, Open Graph tags, and 301 redirects. When built by an experienced developer with proper SEO configuration, Wix sites can and do rank on page one of Google.
Can a Wix website rank on Google?+
Yes. Wix websites rank on Google every day. Google crawls and indexes Wix sites normally. We have built Wix sites that rank on page one for competitive local search terms in London. Ranking depends on content quality, backlink authority, page speed, and proper on-page SEO — not which platform you used.
Is Wix or WordPress better for SEO?+
WordPress has a slight advantage in flexibility — deeper plugin control, better Core Web Vitals with the right theme, and full server access. But for most small and medium businesses, the SEO difference between a well-configured Wix site and a well-built WordPress site is marginal. The bigger factors are content quality, site speed, and backlinks — which apply equally to both platforms.
Does Wix support structured data and schema markup?+
Yes. Wix supports JSON-LD structured data via its built-in schema tools and through custom code blocks in Wix Velo. You can add LocalBusiness, Organization, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, and Product schema. We configure structured data on every Wix site we build as standard.
What are the SEO limitations of Wix?+
The main limitations are: (1) Core Web Vitals — Wix sites tend to score lower than lean WordPress builds; (2) URL structure — prefixes like /blog/ and /product/ cannot always be removed; (3) no server-level control for enterprise-scale technical SEO. For most SME sites these limitations have minimal real-world impact on rankings.
Does Wix hurt your SEO?+
No — using Wix does not hurt your SEO. The platform supports all technical SEO fundamentals Google requires. Where Wix can indirectly limit SEO is if the site is not properly configured or if excessive third-party apps slow it down. These are configuration issues, not platform issues.
How do I improve SEO on a Wix website?+
Set unique meta titles and descriptions on every page. Connect to Google Search Console. Submit your sitemap. Add structured data via Velo or the built-in schema tools. Compress images and use WebP format. Reduce third-party app load. Build internal links between related pages with keyword-rich anchor text.
Can I add schema markup to a Wix site?+
Yes. Wix supports JSON-LD schema via built-in tools (which handle basic schema automatically) and custom HTML or Velo code (for advanced schema types like FAQPage, HowTo, and Service). We add comprehensive schema to every Wix site we build.
